Prospecting Safety

The most important thing to remember to take with you when going prospecting is water!  You should bring enough water to last at least two days longer than you expect to be gone.  Don't forget the food while your at it.

You want to always tell someone where you will be and if at all possible leave a map.  Make note of  approximately what day and time they can expect you back.  Always bring a cell phone.  Don't forget the sun screen, even in the winter.  Ultra violet rays are damaging even when it's not hot out.  A wide brimmed hat is a good idea too.

Be on the look out for snakes.  Especially if its snake season.  Wear the tallest and biggest boots you have, they also protect you from sharp sticks, rocks and scuffing from climbing.  Snake chaps are also a good idea.  Always bring a first aid kit.  You should have one in your vehicle at all times anyway.

Camp fires are one thing most people take lightly.  Be very careful with fire, keep your camp fires small.  You don't need to have eight to ten foot high flames, and keep a bucket of water close the the fire.  Make sure you extinguish your fires and cover the ashes with dirt.

Don't forget the most important part of any prospecting outing, HAVE FUN!
